There are hundreds of cashback apps out there. Most of them are garbage. They either pay pennies, have impossible minimum payouts, or make you jump through hoops to earn anything. We downloaded and tested over 15 cashback apps over the past year to find the ones that actually put real money back in your pocket.
The apps in this guide are legitimate, widely used, and have paid out billions of dollars to real users. We are not listing every cashback app that exists. We are listing the ones worth your time based on how much they actually pay, how easy they are to use, and how quickly you get your money.
The best part? You can use several of these at the same time. Stack them together and you are earning cashback on cashback. We will show you exactly how to do that at the end of this guide.
Cashback rate: 1-15% at 3,500+ stores
Payout method: PayPal or check, paid quarterly
Minimum payout: None (any amount gets paid)
Sign-up bonus: $30 after first qualifying purchase of $30+
Rakuten is the king of cashback apps and it is not close. It has been around since 1999 (originally called Ebates) and has paid out over $5 billion to members. The way it works is dead simple: before you shop online, click through Rakuten to the store you want. That is it. Your cashback is tracked automatically.
The cashback percentages vary by store and change frequently. On a normal day, you might get 3% back at Walmart, 6% at Nike, 8% at Sephora, and 10% at Macy's. During special events (usually around holidays), these rates double or triple. We have seen 15% at major retailers during Black Friday.
Rakuten also works in-store. Link your credit card in the app, and when you shop at participating brick-and-mortar stores, cashback is applied automatically.
Install the Rakuten browser extension. It pops up automatically when you visit a store that offers cashback, so you never forget to activate it. This single habit can earn you $200-500 per year without any extra effort.
Cashback rate: $0.25-$5.00 per item (grocery), 1-10% (online)
Payout method: PayPal, Venmo, or gift cards
Minimum payout: $20
Sign-up bonus: $20 welcome bonus (complete early offers)
Ibotta is the best cashback app for groceries, and in 2026 it has expanded way beyond just grocery stores. You can now earn cashback at restaurants, retail stores, and online shops. But groceries are still where Ibotta shines brightest.
Here is how it works. Before you go shopping, open the app and browse the available offers. You will see things like "$1.00 back on any brand of eggs" or "$2.50 back on Tide detergent." Add the offers you want. After shopping, scan your receipt in the app. The cashback is added to your account instantly.
Ibotta works at every major grocery chain: Walmart, Kroger, Target, Costco, Aldi, Publix, Safeway, and hundreds more. You can also link your store loyalty card for automatic receipt scanning at some stores.
Check Ibotta's "Any Brand" offers first. These give you cashback on generic categories like "any bread" or "any milk" regardless of which brand you buy. You are buying these items anyway. Might as well get paid for it. Active grocery shoppers earn $30-50 per month just from Ibotta.
Cashback rate: Points per receipt (varies by product)
Payout method: Gift cards (Amazon, Target, Walmart, Starbucks, etc.)
Minimum payout: 3,000 points ($3 gift card)
Sign-up bonus: 2,000 points on first receipt scan
Fetch Rewards is the simplest cashback app that exists. You snap a photo of any receipt from any store. That is all you have to do. You earn points on every receipt, with bonus points for purchasing specific brands.
The points add up faster than you think. A typical grocery receipt earns 25-50 base points, plus hundreds of bonus points if you bought partner brands. You can scan receipts from any store, not just grocery. Gas stations, restaurants, hardware stores, pharmacies. Everything counts.
Fetch converts points into gift cards. The conversion rate is roughly 1,000 points = $1. A $10 Amazon gift card costs 10,000 points. Most regular users accumulate enough for a $10-25 gift card every month.
Cashback rate: 1-10% at linked stores and restaurants
Payout method: PayPal, Venmo, or direct deposit
Minimum payout: $25
Sign-up bonus: $1 for linking a card
Dosh is the ultimate set-it-and-forget-it cashback app. You link your credit or debit card, and Dosh automatically gives you cashback when you shop at participating stores and restaurants. You do not need to scan receipts, click through links, or activate offers. It just works in the background.
Dosh works especially well for restaurants and hotels. You can earn 1-5% back at thousands of restaurants across the country, plus cashback on hotel bookings through the app. The hotel cashback can be significant, sometimes 5-10% on bookings.
The downside is the $25 minimum payout, which takes longer to reach than other apps. But since it is completely passive, there is zero effort involved. Link your card and forget about it. Check back in a few months and you will have money waiting.
Cashback rate: Reward credits at various rates
Payout method: Gift cards
Minimum payout: Varies by gift card
Sign-up bonus: None, but earns credits immediately
Capital One Shopping is a free browser extension that does two things really well. First, it automatically checks for coupon codes at checkout and applies the best one. Second, it earns you reward credits when you shop at partner stores.
You do not need a Capital One credit card to use it. It is completely free and works for everyone. When you visit a checkout page, the extension automatically tries every available coupon code and applies the one that saves you the most money. No more googling for coupon codes that do not work.
The reward credits can be redeemed for gift cards to major retailers. It is not as generous as Rakuten for pure cashback, but the automatic coupon-finding feature alone makes it worth installing.
Cashback rate: Honey Gold rewards (varies)
Payout method: PayPal or gift cards
Minimum payout: 1,000 Honey Gold ($10)
Sign-up bonus: 500 Honey Gold after first qualifying purchase
Honey is owned by PayPal and it is one of the most popular browser extensions in the world with over 20 million users. Like Capital One Shopping, it automatically finds and applies coupon codes at checkout. But Honey also has a price tracking feature that alerts you when items in your wishlist drop in price.
The Honey Gold rewards program gives you cashback-like credits when you shop through Honey at participating stores. The rates are decent but not as high as Rakuten. Where Honey really earns its spot is the coupon-finding feature. It consistently finds working codes that save $5-50 on online purchases.
Cashback rate: Kicks (points) for walking in stores, scanning items, purchases
Payout method: Gift cards
Minimum payout: 1,250 kicks ($5 gift card)
Shopkick is different from every other app on this list. You earn points (called "kicks") just for walking into stores. You do not even have to buy anything. Open the app, walk into a participating store (Walmart, Target, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc.), and you earn kicks automatically.
You earn more kicks for scanning product barcodes in-store and even more for making purchases. It is a fun, gamified approach to earning rewards. The earnings per action are small (25-100 kicks per store visit), but they add up if you are already visiting these stores regularly.
Cashback rate: Up to $0.25/gallon on gas, up to 35% at restaurants
Payout method: PayPal, check, bank deposit, or gift cards
Minimum payout: $10
Upside gives you cashback on gas, groceries, and restaurant purchases. The gas cashback is the standout feature. You check the app before filling up, claim an offer at a nearby station, and pay with any credit or debit card. The cashback is deposited into your Upside account.
Gas savings typically range from $0.05 to $0.25 per gallon, depending on the station and current offers. If you drive regularly and fill up 4 times a month, that is $5-15 per month just on gas. The restaurant cashback can be even better, with offers ranging from 5% to 35% at local and chain restaurants.
| App | Best For | Avg. Cashback | Payout | Min. Payout |

Free Tools at spunk.codesThe real power of cashback apps is using several at once. Here is how to stack them for maximum earnings:
Here is what a typical household spending $4,000/month can realistically earn using the stacking methods above:
Total realistic earnings: $792/year
That is free money for doing almost nothing extra. You are buying these things anyway. The only change is opening an app before you shop or scanning a receipt after.
Stay away from apps that require you to complete surveys or watch ads to "earn" cashback. Those are not cashback apps. They are survey apps disguised as cashback apps. Real cashback apps pay you for shopping you were already going to do. If an app asks you to do tasks unrelated to shopping, skip it.
Rakuten is the best overall cashback app for online shopping, offering 1-15% cashback at 3,500+ stores. For groceries, Ibotta is the best choice. For completely passive earning, Dosh is the easiest since it works automatically with your linked credit card. The best approach is using all three together.
Yes. Rakuten pays via PayPal or check. Ibotta pays via PayPal or Venmo. Dosh pays via PayPal, Venmo, or direct deposit. Rakuten alone has paid out over $5 billion total to its members. These are real, legitimate companies backed by major investors.
Most casual users earn $150-$400 per year using 2-3 cashback apps. Active users who stack multiple apps and time purchases around bonus offers can earn $600-$1,200+ per year. It depends on how much you shop and how many apps you use at the same time.
Yes, and you should. You can use Rakuten for online cashback + Honey for coupon codes + your credit card rewards all on the same purchase. For groceries, you can use Ibotta + Fetch Rewards + your store loyalty card on the same receipt. Stacking is the key to maximizing earnings.
Major apps like Rakuten, Ibotta, Fetch, and Dosh are completely safe. They earn money from retailer commissions and share a percentage with you. Avoid any app that asks for your bank login credentials directly, requires upfront payment, or seems too good to be true.
Rakuten has no minimum and pays quarterly. Ibotta has a $20 minimum for PayPal. Fetch lets you redeem starting at $3. Dosh has a $25 minimum. Upside has a $10 minimum. Most users hit these thresholds within the first month.
